8 DAYS HIGH LIGHT - ORTHODOX PILGRIMAGE SAMPLE ITINERARY

1st Day:  Jerusalem Mount of Olives

On the first day we present Jerusalem the geographical, historical overviews and some of the key sites surrounding the area - enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the Holy City from the Mount of Olives, we will visit the Chapel of the Ascension and the church of Mary Magdalene (Gethsemane) the Gardens and the Tomb of the Virgin Mary.
Enter Jerusalem through St Stephen’s Gate into the walled Old City; continue along Via Dolorosa (Way of Sorrow) to the church of the Holy Sepulchre. Dinner and overnight Jerusalem.

2nd Day:  Jericho, Qumran, Dead Sea

We travel to Jericho we will pass Bethany, home of Mary, Martha and Lazarus, and the Inn of the Good Samaritan. Proceed to Jericho to the site of Tel Jericho, the most ancient city in the world, then via the cable car we will ascend  Mount of Temptation to visit the Greek Monastery of Temptation; is the site where Jesus spent forty days and forty nights fasting and meditating during the temptation of Satan, continue to the Dead Sea to the location of the Caves of Qumran, where the famous Dead Sea Scrolls were Found proceed to the shore of the Dead Sea , enjoy a short swim (or rather a float!) in its mineral-rich waters, renowned for its healing properties. Return to our hotel in Jerusalem for Dinner and overnight.

3rd Day Bethlehem, Mount Zion, New City of Jerusalem

From Jerusalem via Hebron road we will pass  St. Elias Monastery heading to Bethlehem, a short view of Rachel’s Tomb on the way then to the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Proceed to Mount Zion in Jerusalem and visit King David’s Tomb, the Dormition Abbey and the last Supper room. We will continue to the new city of Jerusalem to visit the Israel Museum to see the Dead Sea Scrolls. Go to the Bible lands Museum, visit the beautiful Greek Orthodox Monastery of the Cross, according to tradition it stands where the tree grew that was used to make Christ's cross. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

4th Day: Jerusalem

We begin our day with a visit to David’s Citadel or Tower of David, the Geek Orthodox Patriarchate Museum, then we walk through the Cardo the Roman Byzantine Columned Street heading towards the Western Wall and the Temple area. We will see the Scale model of Jerusalem in Jesus time, Visit the lovely village of Ein Karem, birthplace of John the Baptist and the Church of the Visitation where the Blessed Virgin Mary visited her cousin, Elizabeth, and proclaimed the Magnificat. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

5th Day: Jerusalem – Haifa

From Jerusalem via the Plain of Sharon to the city of Lod to visit St. George’s Church, then to  Tel Aviv- Jaffa, the port of Jaffa from which the prophet Jonah embarked. Visit the Museum of the Diaspora, proceed on to Caesarea- capital of Herod the Great, up to Haifa and Mount Carmel for a magnificent view of the port. Visit the Shrines and sites associated with the Prophet Elijah, then to Acre (Akko) the ancient port, and historical monuments from various periods. Dinner and over night in Haifa.

6th Day: Haifa- Nazareth – Tiberias

Leaving Haifa to Mount Tabor and the Church of the Transfiguration. Then to Nazareth, to visit the Basilica and the ancient Grotto of the Annunciation, St Gabriel’s Church, Mary’s Well (Virgin’s Fountain), Church of the Holy Family. Drive to Cana, the village of Jesus' first miracle of changing water into wine. Dinner and overnight in Tiberias.

7th Day: Sunrise on the shores of the Sea of Galilee,

Some of today's specials are a boat ride across the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum to see the synagogue and St Peter's house, a visit to the Mount of the Beatitudes where the Sermon on the Mount was given, then to Tabgha to see the magnificent mosaic about the miracle of the loaves and fish, and then on to the Banias, source of the Jordan River and on to the Golan Heights. Dinner and overnight in Tiberias.

8th Day: Tiberias – Jerusalem

Visit Yardenit Baptismal site in the Jordan River, and Beit Shean, which was one of the Decapolis cities of Jesus’ time. We travel via the Jordan Valley; on the way back to Jerusalem we will visit St. George’s Monastery in Wadi Kelt. Return to our hotel in Jerusalem for Dinner and overnight
